Lord Gabriel Phel wants one thing: to rebuild the shattered fortunes of his people and restore his ruined house to its former station in the Convocation’s highest tiers of elegant society. Fortunately, through a wild chance of birth, he was born with powerful wizard magic, the first in his family in generations. If he can obtain a familiar to amplify his magic, a highborn daughter he can marry, to be mother to his children, he’ll be that much closer to saving his family. With her by his side, he can ascend to such a position of power in the Convocation that he can destroy it forever. Lady Veronica Elal, captive in her tower, has only one way out. To her bitter disappointment, she will never be a wizard. Instead, through a twist of fate, and despite her expensive Convocation Academy education, Nic is doomed to be a familiar like her mother. Forced to participate in the Betrothal Trials, she receives a wizard suitor for one night each month. Whichever man impregnates her will bond her to them forever. With no choice but to serve the one who wins her, Nic has one hope for control over her life: a wizard she can manipulate. Gabriel Phel seems like the perfect choice for Nic’s gambit—he’s desperate and untutored in wizardry—but within moments of meeting him, she feels the bonds of magic tying them together. Afraid of losing her will to the compelling wizard who touches her heart like no other, Nic does the unthinkable: she runs. Pregnant and alone, Nic eludes monstrous hunters, searching for a safe haven. But when Gabriel catches up to her, their adventure has only begun.Book Dark Wizard: a Dark Fantasy Romance (Bonds of Magic Book 1) Review :
What if you took the Taming of the Shrew, removed the misogynistic parts, created relatable and likeable characters, with complex motivations? What if you set them down in a world with layered social mores and problems that don't feel alien because the characters' emotions mirror what we know in our mundane world?Gabriel is the scion House Phel, Lord of a people fallen to disrepair along with their estate. They are surviving through hard labor, barely subsisting as their hope dwindles, when Gabriel shows signs of inheriting a trait not seen for generations. This re-emergence of powerful gifts alone cannot raise them from poverty; he needs a familiar just as powerful if he is to restore House Phel's place within a society bound together by the Convocation. Gabriel is torn from the very first page between his need to prove himself to and desire to take down these arbiters of acceptability.Lady Veronica (Nic) is the eldest daughter of House Elal. Former bearer of her father's hopes and plans, when she didn't inherit the gifts for which her family is known her station is diminished. when the story opens she is at her lowest point, the beautiful princess trapped in a tower, destined to spend one night each month with a different wizard. Her only hope of escape is that one of them will impregnate her thereby establishing that the two of them have what it takes to become a bonded pair. How is this book better than Taming of the Shrew? There's no heavy-handed taming by torture. No admittance of scorn and humiliation into their relationship even when such is expected within their culture. Gabriel and Nic's motives are mixed, but they fight fairly with each other as the story becomes a chase within a chase. There is a small thread of jealously for the younger sister poised to take the place Nic expected for herself, but there's no zero sum where the one's opportunity for happiness necessitates that the other be sacrificed. There is no sense in which Gabriel is getting the lesser sister in his marriage. As the outsider viewing the traditions of the Convocation, Gabriel challenges Nic to see her world, her family, and her life from a different perspective. As the insider holding the keys of navigating the nuance of a system Gabriel cannot understand, Nic can open the door to every hope he holds for his people. And, maybe, become a full partner in his quest.A hallmark of excellence in writing is when the "bones" of setting, plot, character, and dialogue disappear leaving a person immersed in the experience of the story. In Dark Wizard, Jeffe wields the tools of her craft masterfully to accomplish just that. She has the breathtaking ability to craft complete worlds with every cultural requirement revealed or implied by her careful language. But through the pleasantly light touch of exposition, the bright thread of the story never dims. Finally, and perhaps most important of all in a fantasy, her magic systems make sense. You don't have to understand all the mechanisms to believe they should work exactly that way. After some 40+ stories, and a RITA AWARD for fantasy romance, an author could be forgiven for leaning back on previous achievements, or repackaging older ideas. Jeffe continues to push herself through to the next level and then the next after that. Unfortunately for those of us who have and are going to fall in love with this world and these characters, we must wait for the next installment. I . Hate . Waiting.A+ Highly recommended. I read book because reviews praised romance which is very good but didn't warn me that it is set in a storyline filled with abuse, slavery, and perversion. I suppose for some the reading of beloved daughters becoming an abused slave because they don't rank and fantasy setting makes it accepatable but I don't enjoy reading about it.
